DETROIT -- THe Red Wings announced that goaltender Joey MacDonald has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. MacDonald will be inserted into Detroit’s lineup tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes, serving as a back up to starting goaltender Chris Osgood.
MacDonald, 30, has appeared in four games with the Griffins this season, posting a 2-1-1 record, 1.72 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and one shutout. The Pictou, NS, native appeared in eight games for the Red Wings in 2006-07, finishing 1-5-1 with a 3.46 goals-against average and a .872 save-percentage. MacDonald has appeared in 64 additional NHL games with the Boston Bruins (7), New York Islanders (51) and Toronto Maple Leafs (6).
To clear a roster spot for MacDonald, the Red Wings moved veteran forward Kris Draper from short-term to long-term injued reserve and also placed defenseman Brian Rafalski on short-term injured reserve. Draper (sports hernia) and Rafalski (knee) are both currently recovering from recent surgeries.
