Wings-Bruins series begins Friday

DETROIT – Two storied franchises will clash in the only first-round Stanley Cup playoff series that features a pair of Original Six brethren.

This opening-round series begins Friday with Game 1 at Boston’s TD Garden.

The last time the Red Wings and Bruins met in the playoffs was in the 1957 semifinals. Boston won in five games. It was so long ago – 57 years – that John Bucyk played in the series for Detroit, his finals games with the Wings before he was dealt to Boston in the off-season.

The last time the Wings beat the Bruins in a playoff series was the 1945 semifinals. Wings won in seven. That was Ted Lindsay's rookie season.

This time three Red Wings’ rookies – Riley Sheahan, Tomas Jurco and Luke Glendening – will make their debuts in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
