DETROIT - Just as the Red Wings were getting players back, they lose another one.

At the end of the first period, Thomas Vanek went down after appearing to be hit by a shot from teammate Andreas Athanasiou.

Vanek rolled over on the ice in pain and was slow to leave the ice.

Although he skated off the ice on his own, Vanek was still having trouble even after he went down the tunnel to the dressing room.

Vanek did not return for the start of the second and the team announced that he would not return but did not give a reason.

Vanek missed 11 games earlier in the season with a hip injury.

Darren Helm returned Friday in Buffalo after missing 28 games with a dislocated shoulder and Niklas Kronwall returned today against the Rangers after missing the last eight games with a groin injury.

The team is still missing goaltender Jimmy Howard (knee), defenseman Brendan Smith (knee) and forward Steve Ott (shoulder).
