Martin Frk unleashes shot for second goal in as many games

OTTAWA - While the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and Washington Capitals were going goal-crazy elsewhere, the Red Wings and Ottawa Senators were in a defensive battle in Ottawa.

Martin Frk scored with 2:34 left in the third but Dion Phaneuf's shot eluded Jimmy Howard with 1:51 remaining to force overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, Frans Nielsen scored the only goal in the shootout for a 2-1 victory.

1. Jimmy Howard : Howard had a career year statistically last season, despite playing just 26 games due to injury. The veteran goaltender has picked up right where he left off in the world championships. Against the Senators, Howard was tested quite a bit, particularly on four consecutive Senators power plays in the first period. In the second, Ryan Dzingel came in on a breakaway but a calm Howard made the save. Howard made 37 of 38 saves in regulation and overtime and then stopped Kyle Turris, Bobby Ryan and Derick Brassard in the shootout.

Quotable: "I thought Jimmy was good. He's been real solid. I think we've done a pretty good job of not giving up high, high chances, high-end chances. We' ve given up a number of shots but I think he's battled in front of our net. The few outnumbered rushes they had, we made some plays on defensively. Obviously big breakaway save int he second. But just overall, he's playing solid." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill

2. Craig Anderson: Anderson was a big reason that the Senators nearly defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. That is why the Senators signed Anderson to a two-year extension on Sept. 29. Anderson matched Howard save for save throughout most of the game. After the two passed each other after the second, they bumped gloves in acknowledgement. Anderson's best save came in the second when Nick Jensen came around the net, Anderson stopped the wraparound attempt and then slid over to stone Justin Abdelkader, who had the rebound and a formerly open net.

Quotable: "I think both goalies played unbelievable, they made some saves on both sides. Overall, I thought it was a decent game from both teams. I thought we played with a lot of pace here today and our PK was huge for us. But overall good effort. Nice to see that we can claim the two points." - Henrik Zetterberg

3. Martin Frk: Wings defenseman Mike Green said that while Frk's shot is one of the hardest he's seen, it is also deceptive. That is what worked in Frk's favor when he quickly shot the puck from the slot to Anderson's glove side. Frk now has two goals in two games.

Quotable: "It's nice. His shot is a weapon. Today, it's not really a chance. He just got the puck and fired it and basically overpowered Anderson. It's good to see. He's on a good pace here."

Quotable II: "He's good. His shot is his weapon. I don't think goalies realize when they put it on the pre-scout how hard and how fast it's coming off his stick. When it comes off, it comes off fast. He's just got to keep using it." - Howard

Quotable III: "It's great. You got to have guys that can score and he can score. I said it before the year he'd a guy that can score on one shot and he's done that. He's done that in critical moments in two games now. He's made such good improvements in his game that he can be out there late in games because I trust him a lot and he uses that weapon of a shot." - Blashill
