WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Red Wings aren't having trouble getting the lead of late, they're having trouble keeping it.
But they demonstrated some resolve to earn a victory.

After taking a 4-1 lead in the second period, the Wings couldn't prevent the Washington Capitals from rallying to tie the game in the third.
But the Wings prevailed on a 2-on-1 as Tomas Tatar scored his second goal of the game at 2:47 of overtime to give Detroit a 5-4 win at Capital One Arena Sunday afternoon.
It came one game after the Wings blew two three-goal leads and lost in overtime to the New York Islanders.
The Wings improved to 22-23-9 overall and 11-12-2 on the road while the Capitals fell to 32-17-6 overall and 20-8-2 at home.
Justin Abdelkader, Luke Glendening, Anthony Mantha and Tatar (two, OT winner) scored for Detroit while Alex Ovechkin (power play), Brett Connolly, Dmitry Orlov and Nicklas Backstrom scored for Washington.
1. Tomas Tatar: There's just something about Tatar against the Capitals. Earlier in the season, Tatar got two goals against them at Little Caesars Arena and duplicated that Sunday in Washington. With just over 10 seconds remaining in the second period, Tatar took a pass from Dylan Larkin in the left circle and did a toe drag, beating Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby in scoring his 13th of the season. In overtime, Tatar and Larkin had a 2-on-1 and Tatar buried it at 2:47, his 14th of the season.

Quotable: "Jense (Nick Jensen) first of all, he made a nice play in the D zone. I knew we had a two on one. I tried to slide the puck to Dyls and he made a really nice play between the legs of the D-man and I was fortunate to put the puck in." - Tatar
Quotable II: "Jense made a great play in the D-zone to get it up the wall. I had the back-checker, the defenseman that came up for a change, so when I saw the puck go to the corner I was able to cheat a little bit - I know Blash won't like that - I went to the blue line and the puck popped to Tats and we had a 2-on-1, so he kicked it wide and drove to the net. He used his great hands in front of the net and made a great move on Holtby." - Larkin
Quotable III: "Two big goal scorer's goals there. He's a real big goal scorer. He gets a little streaky at times, and hopefully he can get streaky hot here. He has been snake bitten, but I also think the goals followed what I think has been real good play here the last little bit." - Blashill
2. Anthony Mantha: After getting just one point in nine games, Mantha has come alive again. Mantha scored twice on Friday against the New York Islanders, the second a deflection that was originally credited to Niklas Kronwall. At 17:02 of the second period, Mantha went to the net and captain Henrik Zetterberg sent the puck from behind the net to Mantha and he beat Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby stick-side for his 19th of the season. The goal, which came nine seconds after Glendening's goal, gave the Wings a 3-1 lead. Mantha finished with 26 shifts for 21:46, second only by two seconds to Dylan Larkin among forwards.
Quotable: "Today, Z's pass was just unreal. Pickpocket that D and just found me in the slot alone. Obviously, you want to shoot as much as you can. As a team we're doing a better job these days and we're getting results." - Mantha
Quotable II: "What I'm seeing right now is work ethic. I think he's been excellent. I think his second effort's been good, I think his skating's been good. For me it's just the simplicity of bending his knees. When he bends his knees and skates, he's excellent. To me, that's the fire starter for him. What's the one thing that makes a big difference? To me it's when he bends his knees and skates as opposed to skating straight-legged. That's just a thing he's been working on for a long time. I think his work ethic has been great the last 10 games." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
3. Justin Abdelkader: Last season was a tough one for the Wings' alternate captain, who was limited to 64 games because of a knee injury. Although he has had a fractured cheekbone that only kept him out one game and a groin injury that forced him to miss six games, Abdelkader has otherwise been fairly healthy. At 13:37 of the first period, Abdelkader picked the pocket of Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen and broke in alone on Holtby. Abdelkader deked right, got Holtby out of position and then beat him stick-side. The goal, assisted by Frans Nielsen, was Abdelkader's ninth of the season, two more than he had all of last season. His 23 points are also two more than he had all of last season.

Quotable: "After the second, when I thought we pushed back hard, I guess score would be the only thing else we could have done. I thought we pushed back hard at that point. The one thing we talk about is making sure one mistake doesn't lead to two and lead to three and when you make a mistake, let's make a hard play and if you have to ice the puck, ice the puck, but let's make sure one mistake stays at one mistake, so that's something we'll keep working on. I thought there were moments of hard push-back, you get late in the game there and you take a penalty and they're able to score. They obviously got a good power play. Our PK is a little fragile right now but we'll get the PK going, we got great penalty-killers. We'll get it back going." - Blashill
Quotable II: "It was nice to see that we got the two points. It is important for us. This road trip, we got three out of four points and that's the only thing we can focus on, getting as many points as we can here. When we're playing well, we're playing good hockey. When we roll the four lines, a lot of the guys are contributing offensively. We just got to stick with it." - Zetterberg
