– It’s been eight weeks since Jonathan Ericsson
underwent surgery to repair damage to the middle finger on his left hand after he was struck by a puck in mid-March.
The surgery was necessary to stabilize several fractures and repair a partially torn tendon in the defenseman’s left middle finger.
“It was a shot that hit me and must of hit me badly and had a lot of fractures on my fingers,” said Ericsson, who was injured March 18 against Toronto. “The doctor had to go in there and puzzle everything back together. They did a really good job. It looks nice right now. It was a bad break. Bad breaks.”
Doctors inserted four pins into Ericsson’s finger. Last Friday doctors removed one of the pins but decided three pins needed to remain embedded to help the healing process.
“The tendon is take more time than the bone to heal,” he said. “It’s looking pretty good from what the doctors are saying. We’ll see how it looks when they take the pins out. … I’m not sure what day those are coming out. I’m not going to be able to handle the puck or anything because I still need to be in this splint.”
Ericsson is still on pace to return to action later this month, he said.
He will start skating on his own Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, however, a timetable for a likely return for the Red Wings series against the Boston Bruins, which begins with Game 1 on Friday, hasn’t been established.
“I think it’s too early to tell,” Ericsson said. “The round could go on for about two weeks. It’s not going to be at the beginning of this round I know that. I’ve got three more pins in there that need to be taken out. I think it’s next week, end of next week. After that I think they will know more what the timeframe it.”
Ericsson missed 34 games this season, including the last 14 with the broken finger. He also missed time with a separated shoulder and two broken ribs. Ericsson produced a goal and 11 points with a plus-2 rating in 48 games this season.
