Sore ankle still sidelines Lidstrom

by Bill Roose / Detroit Red Wings
DETROIT -- Six-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom will miss his second straight game with a sore left ankle.

The injury occurred during the first period of last Friday's loss in Nashville. X-rays were negative, but the ankle is still too sore to allow Lidstrom to pivot or push off of effectively.

He did not practice with the Red Wings today in the morning skate and will miss tonight's game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Joe Louis Arena.

Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios will play in his third game of the season in Lidstrom's absence.

Tonight, the Wings and Blackhawks will meet for the 700th time in the regular-season. It is the longest running rivalry in the NHL. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Wings have compiled a 354-254-91 record against the Blackhawks.

The Wings and Blackhawks have played twice this season, with Detroit winning both previous games in shoot-outs on Oct. 25 at the United Center, and Dec. 6 at Joe Louis Arena.

In the last 10 meetings, the Wings are 5-4-1 against the Blackhawks, and are winners of five of the last six games by a combined score of 23-18. In that time, the Red Wings' offense has been paced by forwards Jiri Hudler (4-8--12) and Henrik Zetterberg (5-6--11).

The Wings and 'Hawks will finish their home-and-home series when the two meet on New Year's Day in the NHL's second annual Winter Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
