DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings continue efforts to provide smoke detectors to low-income residents with the annual collection of detectors at home games this week.
The team will host collections at Joe Louis Arena this Sunday, December 4th against the New York Islanders and Tuesday, December 6th against the New Jersey Devils. Fans who donate new detectors with batteries at these games will be given the chance to win autographed Brendan Shanahan memorabilia.
The smoke detector collection program was started by Shanahan four years ago in memory of his father who was a firefighter. Concerned with the number of house fires in the metro Detroit area, Shanahan joined forces with the Detroit Fire Department to collect and assist in the installation of detectors to low-income residents.
Shanahan will match the total of all detectors collected with a personal donation.
