Samuelsson signs three-year extension

DETROIT - General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has signed forward Mikael Samuelsson to a three-year contract extension. In keeping with club policy, terms of the contract are not available.


"Mikael has been a key player throughout this season and earned the opportunity to stay in Detroit," said Holland. "I'm happy to have him signed and to be able to keep in him a Red Wings jersey for the next three seasons."

Samuelsson posted career highs in goals, assists and points this season, tallying 21 goals and 17 assists in 58 games with Detroit. He signed with Detroit on September 17, 2005.

Prior to joining the Red Wings, Samuelsson played with the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers. During his five-year NHL career Samuelsson has played 246 games and scored 40 goals to go along with 47 assists.

Samuelsson was one of five Red Wings to win a gold medal as a member of the Swedish National Team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
