Detroit trims roster to 31

Red Wings prepare for 2018-19 season opener on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today assigned forwards David Pope, Givani Smith, Dominic Turgeon and Filip Zadina, defenseman Vili Saarijarvi and goaltender Harri Sateri to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins. Additionally, the Red Wings have released left wing Jussi Jokinen from his professional tryout.

The Red Wings' roster currently sits at 31 players: 17 forwards, 12 defensemen and two goaltenders. After wrapping up preseason play with a 7-1-0 record, the Red Wings must submit their 23-man roster by Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Detroit will open the regular season by hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena (FOX Sports Detroit/97.1 The Ticket).
