Red Wings win 'Fire on Ice' charity softball game

Brian Rafalski was one of four Red Wings to try his luck in the pitcher's circle during the team's charity softball game in Royal Oak on Sept. 9.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- The Detroit Red Wings teamed up against the Royal Oak Fire Fighters on September 9, for the ‘Fire on Ice’ charity softball game at Memorial Field. With a crowd of over 1,500 fans, the Red Wings beat the firefighters, 23-19.

Stepping up to the plate were Wings favorites Chris Chelios, Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk, Dallas Drake, Kris Draper, Valtteri Filppula, Tomas Holmstrom, Jimmy Howard, Tomas Kopecky, Niklas Kronwall, Brett Lebda, Nicklas Lidstrom, Andreas Lilja, Kirk Maltby, Kyle Quincey and Brian Rafalski. Wings broadcasters Ken Daniels, Ken Kal and Mickey Redmond also took part in the charity event.

one-handed batting style of Lilja, and home runs hit by Quincey and Cleary. Pitching for the Wings were Chelios, Quincey, Rafalski and Maltby.

"We were getting our butts kicked early on,” Maltby said.  “I wasn’t too sure we were going to get to the seventh inning.”

The Wings also had a chance to sign autographs for fans and even handed-over their game-worn jerseys to a few special raffle winners.

All proceeds from the event benefited the Detroit Red Wings Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
