Recap: Red Wings can't complete comeback in 5-2 loss to Stars

DALLAS -- It was another tough outing for the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night, as the Detroit offense was unable to provide much support on the scoreboard until late as the Red Wings fell to the Dallas Stars, 5-2, at American Airlines Center.
Detroit dropped its second straight contest in as many days and fell to 8-8-2 on the season, while Dallas extended its winning streak to two games and moved to 6-6-2. Tuesday's final score also marked the Stars' ninth consecutive home victory over the Red Wings.

In the first period, the Stars outshot the Red Wings, 12-4. This strong start made all the difference for Dallas, as it struck first with 6:27 into the game when defenseman Ryan Suter welcomed a feed from center Radek Faksa, then shot the puck around traffic into the top left corner of the cage to give the Stars an early 1-0 lead.
Just 66 seconds into the second period, Stars winger Jamie Benn tipped in a point shot from defenseman Miro Heiskanen for his third goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game.

Stars winger Roope Hintz scored his third goal in as many games with 12:36 left in the second period. That pushed Dallas ahead, 3-0, and for Roberston, he extended his assist streak to four games.
Detroit cut into its deficit 1:45 later when forward Filip Zadina, assisted off a backhand pass from center Sam Gagner, scored a backhand goal to put the Red Wings on the board, 3-1. It was Zadina's third goal of the season and his first since Oct. 30, when he scored against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Momentum seemed to shift at the 5:34 mark of the second period. Just 13 seconds into Detroit's first power play of the game, a string of passes from winger Lucas Raymond to defenseman Moritz Seider saw the puck go straight to Dylan Larkin. The Red Wings captain capitalized and smoked an 80-mile-per-hour wrister from the left circle that zipped past Stars goalie Jake Oettinger to make it a 3-2 game.

Larkin left the game after the second period, and after the contest, Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said the captain was removed due to COVID-19 protocols.
With 3:48 into the third period, Stars winger Jason Robertson gave his team some breathing room when he scored on a wraparound that went between Nedeljkovic's legs to put Dallas ahead by two goals (4-2), and Roberston capped the scoring with a finish into an empty net with 1:37 to play in the game.
Former Red Wings forward and Grand Rapids, Mich., native Luke Glendening played his first game against his former team on Tuesday night after playing eight seasons in Detroit. Glendening earned an assist on Robertson's empty-net goal for his sixth point of the season.
The Red Wings will continue their four-game road trip and look to stop their two-game skid on Thursday night as they face the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. Puck drop for Thursday's matchup is set for 10 p.m., with broadcast coverage on Bally Sports Detroit and the Red Wings Radio Network.
