DETROIT -The Detroit Red Wings today signed free agent defenseman Trevor Daley to a three-year contract.

Daley is coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins, combining for 41 points (11-30-41), a plus-15 rating and 63 penalty minutes in 109 regular-season games over the past two seasons with Pittsburgh. The 33-year-old defenseman added 11 points (2-9-11), a plus-eight rating and 34 penalty minutes in 36 postseason games over the same span. In 2016-17, Daley finished fifth on the Penguins in time on ice at 20:22 per game and averaged the third-most points-per-game by the team's defensemen with 19 points (5-14-19) in 56 games. He added five points (1-4-5) in 21 games during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs while averaging 19:06 time on ice.
A veteran of 13 NHL seasons, Daley has registered 278 points (78-200-278), a plus-22 rating and 580 penalty minutes in 894 games with the Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and Penguins since breaking into the NHL with Dallas in 2003-04. Daley has produced his two best offensive seasons over the past three years, setting career highs in 2014-15 with 16 goals and 38 points in 68 games with Dallas and following that up with his second-highest career point total in 2015-16, tallying 28 points (6-22-28) in 82 games between Chicago and Pittsburgh. He has also logged 71 career NHL postseason games, registering 18 points (6-12-18), a plus-seven rating and 74 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound defenseman was originally drafted by the Stars in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Daley's 231 points (67-164-231) in 756 games with Dallas rank fourth in franchise history by a defenseman.
The Toronto, Ontario, native also spent parts of two seasons in the American Hockey League, notching 48 points (15-33-48) and 185 penalty minutes in 118 games with the Utah Grizzlies and Hamilton Bulldogs from 2003-05. Prior to his professional career, Daley posted four-straight seasons of at least 40 points in the Ontario Hockey League for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 1999-03. In 216 career OHL games, he notched 188 points (59-129-188), a plus-12 rating and 348 penalty minutes. Daley also twice represented Canada on the international stage, picking up one assist in seven games at the 2006 IIHF World Championship and captaining Canada Ontario during the 2000 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, tallying eight points (5-3-8) in six games.
