Coach Jeff Blashill doesn't think Justin Abdelkader will be out long

DETROIT - The good news is the Red Wings got a point for the fifth straight game.

However, they were not pleased with their overall game after the 2-1 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers, their Atlantic Division rival.

The Wings are now 0-2-1 against the Panthers this season with one more meeting remaining in Sunrise, Fla., Dec. 23.

1. Henrik Zetterberg : The captain got the Wings on the board early, intercepting Aaron Ekblad's pass, which was meant for Aleksander Barkov and beating Florida goaltender Roberto Luongo just 1:23 into the game. It is Zetterberg's 313th goal, one behind Pavel Datsyuk for seventh in franchise history. He has one goal and four assists in his past six games. Zetterberg leads the team with 16 points. Zetterberg had a chance at 1:16 of overtime to end it when Anthony Mantha found him but the puck was bouncing a bit and Luongo was there for the stop. Then Barkov got the game-winner at 2:04 on a breakaway, his first goal since Oct. 15 against the Wings.

Quotable: "Mo makes a nice play, long reach, throws it back to me. Didn't get all of it. I'd like to see the replay but he made the save." - Zetterberg

Quotable II: "I don't even remember when I scored my last goal so it felt great to see one go in and the win felt even better." - Barkov

2. Justin Abdelkader : At 8:35 of the first period, Abdelkader hit Vincent Trocheck and came away from the collision flexing his right leg. At the start of the second period, the Wings announced that Abdelkader would not return to the game due to a lower-body injury. He had just four shifts for 3:08 ice time. Abdelkader also missed two games earlier in the season with a lower-body injury.

Quotable: "It didn't affect things. That's part of the game. I think lots of times, we've seen ourselves, we've stepped up when we've lost other players. I don't think it had a real effect. That's a long-term thing. Obviously, Abby's a big piece of what we do. I don't think he's going to be out that long, but we'll see. We'll know more on that tomorrow."

3. Injuries mounting: With Abdelkader going out in the first period, the Wings' list of injuries grew longer. They are already without Andreas Athanasiou (left knee), Darren Helm (dislocated shoulder), Alexey Marchenko (shoulder), Jimmy Howard (groin), Tyler Bertuzzi (ankle) and Brendan Smith (right knee). In addition, Thomas Vanek missed 11 games, Tomas Jurco missed 22 and Niklas Kronwall missed 13. Because of a chronic knee condition, Kronwall has not played in back-to-back games. The Wings have been through injury epidemics before.

Quotable: "I think that's just part of the game. Some years that's just the way it goes. You can't feel sorry for yourself. You've just got to look at the guy next to you and say, 'We've got to do this together.' Every time someone goes down that's another opportunity for someone else to grab a little bit more ice time. So we have to do it together. But again it comes down to doing in right and we didn't do that tonight." - Kronwall
