Red Wings launch augmented reality function ‘Wingscape’ within mobile application

by Alex DiFilippo / Detroit Red Wings

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today announced the launch of augmented reality technology available through the Red Wings Official Mobile App. Coined ‘Wingscape,’ the augmented reality platform will give fans an exciting and unique way to explore everything surrounding the Red Wings through interaction with real-world objects and images found at Joe Louis Arena, online or from home.

Similar to the technology behind QR codes, fans can explore augmented reality by launching the Red Wings Mobile App and selecting ‘Wingscape’ on the main menu. Fans can then search for the ‘Wingscape’ logo and scan it with a mobile device to launch fully-immersive experiences, including behind-the-scenes videos, animations and greetings from select Red Wings players. The ‘Wingscape’ logo can be found at multiple locations within Joe Louis Arena when attending a Red Wings game and online at DetroitRedWings.com.

Red Wings augmented reality video animation can also be discovered by scanning any of the following with your mobile device:

• Winged Wheel logos
• Cover of a Red Wings Today game program
• Front of a Red Wings season ticket holder game ticket
• Cover of the Red Wings 2015 Wall Calendar

“We have worked to create a Red Wings App that delivers the content and experiences our fans want via their mobile devices,” said Laura Murray, Director of Digital Marketing and Analytics for Olympia Entertainment and the Detroit Red Wings. “Red Wings fans want to connect with the players in a different way, and by introducing augmented reality, we hope to give them that experience.”

Powered by HP Aurasma, ‘Wingscape’ is currently available for the iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android versions of the free Red Wings Official Mobile App, presented by AT&T. Fans can learn more about ‘Wingscape’ by watching a video introduction of the new technology at DetroitRedWings.com/Wingscape.

In addition to ‘Wingscape,’ the latest version of the Red Wings Mobile App features breaking news surrounding the team, live streaming video, social sharing, player bios, statistics and more. To download the Red Wings Mobile App for free, click here.
