Detroit hasn't seen much of the Blackhawks since moving to the Eastern Conference a year ago. The two Original Six clubs will meet for just the fourth time in the past two seasons tonight at the United Center. Detroit, victors of the first match-up with the Hawks back in November, hasn't won in three straight games and has had a struggle scoring goals. Seeking an offensive spark, the Red Wings recalled rookie forward Teemu Pulkkinen from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
“I saw a kid that was a little bit nervous,” Babcock said. “That’s why we sent him back down. He’s got an absolute bomb of a shot. He’s tenacious. He’s on the puck. He’s strong. The NHL today there’s no room. We have to find ways to generate offense in no space. You have to create your own space. Being strong on your feet, being able to leverage your body is so important and he does those things.”
Pulkkinen, who scored his first NHL goal in a six-game season debut stint mid January, had 10 goals and 18 points in 11 games after being sent back down. Pulkkinen leads the AHL with 30 goals and 57 points. Jimmy Howard will get his third straight start in goal for the Red Wings.
