At the Kroger in Northville (425 North Center St.), Head Coach Jeff Blashill will join Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland, who is serving as Honorary Chairman of the 2016 Red Kettle Campaign for the 11th straight year. The duo will look to defend their bell-ringing title, as Blashill and Holland raised more than $6,000 last year in the two-hour span.
Fans visiting Hockeytown Authentics in Troy can obtain an autograph from forwards Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm by making a $10 donation per player. Forwards Anthony Mantha and Luke Glendening will also represent the Red Wings at Kroger in Royal Oak, while Red Wings Alumni Chris Chelios, Kris Draper and Chris Osgood will bell ring at the second Kroger location in Northville (17447 Haggerty Rd.).
Fans unable to attend the bell ringing events on Friday can still support The Salvation Army by texting "REDWINGS" to 41444 and selecting one of the four groups to support in the competition.
New this season, the funds raised will support the Salvation Army's STRIVE (Student Training for Integrity, Vitality and Education) youth floor hockey program. Introduced in 2009, the program teaches the basics of the sport of hockey, team building skills and positive sportsmanship behavior to children ages 8-12.
This season marks the 11th consecutive year the Detroit Red Wings and The Salvation Army have teamed up through the "Red Wings for Red Kettles" initiative to help the nonprofit reach its $8.4 million Red Kettle Campaign goal. Last season, the initiative raised $13,700 to increase the total raised by the team to more than $100,000 for the nonprofit since 2005.
Additionally, Ken Holland was presented with the prestigious 2016 William Booth Award by the Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division. Named after the Salvation Army founder William Booth, the award is presented to individuals who demonstrate outstanding humanitarian efforts within - and service to - the community through donation of time, expertise and energy.
