DETROIT -- For the second-straight game, one bad period ultimately doomed the Detroit Red Wings.
After playing to a 1-1 first period, Detroit (7-15-3) surrendered three unanswered goals and were outshot, 17-4, in the second period en route to a 4-1 defeat to the Columbus Blue Jackets (9-10-5) on Tuesday at Nationwide Arena.

"Tonight wasn't good enough," said coach Jeff Blashill. "I think we came out in the first, we played fine. But once the goals started going the wrong way, we melted too much. We gotta make sure we dig in better.
"At the end of the day, in the second we were defending the whole time, we were chasing them the whole time, chasing them in our own end and chasing them back up the ice. That's no way to play hockey."

Anthony Mantha scored the lone goal for Detroit on the power play, marking the third straight game the Red Wings have cashed in with the man advantage.
"I thought he did a really, really good job," Blashill said of Mantha's game. "The fact that he got on the scoresheet is a positive. It reinforces playing the right way. I thought overall he played the way he has to play to be successful."
The victory for Columbus gave the Blue Jackets a 2-0-1 edge in the eight-game season series against Detroit and snapped a five-game winless streak for the club.
For the third straight game, the Red Wings were without captain Dylan Larkin, who will also miss Thursday's game at Carolina with an upper-body injury.
Columbus opened the scoring courtesy of a Cam Atkinson short-handed goal at 7:44 of the first period, marking the NHL-best 17th time this season the Blue Jackets have scored the first goal of the game.
The shorthanded tally surrendered by Detroit was only the second allowed this season and first since Jan. 22 at Chicago, which came with an empty net.
Mantha notched the score at 1-1 at 15:45 of the first period on the Red Wings second power-play of the game with assists credited to Christian Djoos and Bobby Ryan. Mantha's goal was his first point in eight games.

DET@CBJ: Mantha buries a wrist shot for PPG

It appeared defenseman Seth Jones gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead with 12:53 left in the second period when he walked in a fired a wrist shot past Bernier. However, Detroit challenged the call and it was deemed the play was offside and the goal was disallowed.
But 19 seconds later, at 7:26, Riley Nash lit the lamp to reclaim the lead for Columbus and Jack Roslovic followed suit less than two minutes later with a power-play goal to give the Blue Jackets a 3-1 edge.
Boone Jenner scored the third goal of the middle frame on a perfectly placed wrist shot at 17:37 to give the Blue Jackets a 4-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Bernier made 23 saves on 27 shots through two periods before being replaced in net by Thomas Greiss to start the final frame. Greiss stopped all nine shots he faced, as the third period went scoreless.
The four goals surrendered by Bernier were the most he'd given up in his last nine appearances dating back to Jan. 24 at Chicago.
"We have to help our goalies out more," said center Luke Glendening. "They've been keeping us in games and we gotta help them out more. They've been playing well and we've hung them out to dry too many times. We gotta be better as a collective."
Detroit will wrap-up its four-game road trip on Thursday at Carolina as the Red Wings visit PNC Arena for the first time this season. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
