DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today assigned defenseman Ryan Sproul to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Additionally, Detroit removed right wing Johan Franzen from injured reserve. Franzen is expected to return to the lineup as the Red Wings take on the Montreal Canadiens tonight at 7:30 p.m. (FOX Sports Detroit/AM 1270).

A native of Toronto, Ont., Sproul has skated in 53 games with the Griffins this season, tying for eighth on the team and ranking second among AHL rookie defensemen with 24 points (8-16-24). Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (55th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the first-year pro spent the last three seasons with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, earning 153 points (57-96-153) and 134 penalty minutes in 172 career games. He capped off his major junior career by leading the league’s blueliners with 66 points (20-46-66) and winning the CHL Defenseman of the Year award and the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL’s most outstanding defenseman.
