What did you see on the Gallagher goal?
Goalie - DET
GAA: 3.03 | Sv%: .931
“I disagree with the goal but the ref said it’s a goal so it counted and nothing we can do about it.”
Did you still maintain your focus after that first goal?
“I am focused all the time. I am trying to be. It gave me more confidence to stop more pucks and don’t let in any more goals.”
What was the explanation you received from referee Dave Jackson?
“He told me the puck went in the net early (before) the guy hit me but the puck hit me in the pass and I feel like the guy hit me in the pad and it went in. Tough call.”
Were you screened on the Jeff Petry goal?
“I didn’t see the puck coming through, I think it went through two, three guys.”
How did you feel tonight?
“I felt pretty good, especially early in the game. They had some power plays. I feel pretty good but most important is the two points and Montreal has them.”
How did you feel about going up against Carey Price?
“He’s been pretty good this season but you don’t look who is at the other end, you’re trying to stop as many pucks as you can and win the game for our team.”
How did you feel in your first game back?
Defense - DET
Goals: 0| Assists: 0| Pts: 0
Shots: 2 | +/-: 1
“I felt all right out there. As the game went on I started to get my legs a little bit. I don’t think I was as sharp as I need to be out there. Hopefully that comes a long a little better.”
How did you think the game went tonight?
“We had stretches where I thought we played pretty well but for the most part it wasn’t really there for us tonight. We kind of got outworked a little bit. Got to give Montreal a little bit of credit, they were flying out there and we just weren’t up to the task, I guess.”
How tough was Price?
“Same as with all goalies, you got to get traffic in front of the net and bang rebounds home because if goalies are seeing the puck these days they’re going to stop it. Most of the goals come on second chances and we didn’t have enough of those tonight.”
How did team look playing the second night of a back-to-back set?
“There’s little changes within our system that we still need to iron out, different parts of the game but I think the biggest thing is compete level. I didn’t think tonight for 60 minutes we competed hard enough.
“I thought we battled hard coming off a back to back but I don’t think we got enough shots in traffic towards the net. Price is an all-star caliber goalie, so you got to have second chances to win games.”
How did you feel?
“I felt all right. I can definitely be better out there. I didn’t think I my passing was as crisp as it needs to be. I just got to work on it.”
How bad did penalties hurt the team’s rhythm?
“It didn’t help us. I don’t know how many penalties we had but it felt like we were in the box quite a bit tonight. It just takes away from the flow of the game. You’re in your own zone for two minutes. Whether you kill it, it’s great, but it’s still taking offense away from you. You’re in your own zone defending for two minutes and when it’s time to play offense maybe you don’t have quite as much energy.”
Did pace of the game wear on you?
“The pace was really quick out there but it’s the NHL and it’s expected. Anytime you’re coming back from injury you just got to get back into the flow of the game as best you can.”

What did you make of Gallagher’s goal?
“In terms of what?”
Did you agree with the goal?
“I’ve got no comment on that goal or the process regarding that goal.”
Where you under the impression that you could challenge at that point?
“No I understand the rules for sure. But again I got no comment on that. That to me is an internal thing that we will handle internally.”
Was the rule based on the kicking motion?
“Again, they decided it was a goal. I’ve got no comment further on it.”
We’re special teams a disappointment tonight?
“I think to win on the road against a team that’s undefeated, that’s playing with a lot of confidence, they’re a good hockey team and we’re going to have to win the specialty teams battle. Tonight we lot it, so we’ve got to go back to work Monday and make sure that we continue to improve both at the power play and the penalty kill.”
Did you think Mrazek lost focus?
“No, I thought Petr played well the rest of the game, to be honest with you. I thought he had to make some real big saves in the third. We broke down defensively a few times and I thought he continued to give us a chance to win the hockey game. The power-play goal was a heck of a screen, and the other he had really no chance on, so I thought Petr continued to battle like he normally does.”
Does shot differential disturb you?
“It concerns me. We’ve got to do a better job of generating more shots and not giving up as many. That means we’re probably spending way too much time in our zone, so I think there’s lots of areas that we can continue to improve at. That’s the end of a five-game segment for us. Our goal is to get six of our every 10 points. We did that. Now we have to move into a new one on Wednesday.”
What don’t you like about the power play?
“We actually had some chances on the power play, so I want to make that clear. My only issue is probably too much one and done. I thought our chances were a little bit more in the rush. I think we need to find a way to make sure we spend time in the zone and in a game like this, again, you just … it’s a results orientated league and you have to make sure you end up on the positive side of the specialty teams battle.”
Larkin has points now in five-straight games, pretty impressive?
“He’s done a real good job, obviously. He’s had an impact in every game in a positive fashion. There’s still things he needs to get better at and him and I will continue to work on those things. Not just him and I, but him and the coaching staff, but he’s certainly done a real good job so far.”
Got to get some guys going in this next five-game segment?
“Yeah, I would say that. I agree with that. I think the strength of our team can be the depth of our team and the depth of scoring. I think we’ve got guys that have a lot more in their game, and that’s not to say they’re not playing well, but I look from a production standpoint we’ve got more to give from a lot of different guys.”
Have you leaned anything from this second set of back to backs that you can use in coming weeks?
“We’ll evaluate as a staff with our leaders and see if there’s a different approach to take. I thought our energy level was actually good tonight. I thought different than Carolina. I didn’t think we weren’t skating. I didn’t think we did that. We didn’t execute quite well enough, but I thought our energy level was pretty good throughout.”
How was Darren Helm in his first game back in the lineup?
“I thought Helm did a good job. I thought Helmer right away kind of got into a battle going for a puck and I think that kind of gave him confidence. I think the thing with Helmer it’s just to continue to gain confidence that he can do what he does. He’s got to throw his body around a little bit to be a real effective player and hopefully he can build off of tonight.”
How about the job that Danny DeKeyser did in his first game back?
“Yeah, I thought Danny’s game got better as the game went along, and by the end it was the Danny DeKeyser that makes him an elite defenseman in this league where he’s making big-time defensive plays and good stick on puck and things like that.”
Did you think Mrazek was pretty sharp throughout the game?
“I think Petr was good. I think we’ve gotten good goaltending here in this stretch of five games. We’re going to need that to continue to be a strength of our team, and I think it will.”
Do you like the line combination of Nyquist, Sheahan and Pulkkinen?
“Yeah, I liked it. I went away from it a little bit in the third, just to see if we could get some different energy going. But I did like the combination and I think if those three guys are plating at a high level then there’s a lot of ability. There’s a good mix of size, skill. Sheahan is a net-presence guy, so I do like it. We’ll see what we decide to do on Monday.”
Did you know Michigan State had won?
Left Wing - DET
Goals: 4 | Assists: 1 | Pts: 5
Shots: 9 | +/-: 3
"I didn't know for sure. I didn't know the final. I found out after the first."
Did you see the replay?
"I did. Millsie showed me. If the punter falls on the ball, Michigan State probably still doesn't win because they had one play and it's too long for a field goal. You feel for him, he's just trying to make a play. in football there's a lot of weird things that happen, breaks. Now we don't have to listen to Michigan fans for another year."
So do Glendening and Larkin have to wear green?
"They are on Monday."
Did you hear what happened to guy who scored winning TD?
"The guy that scored? No. (dislocated hip) Oh, my God, poor guy. Another injury."
Did you hear Michigan punter getting threats on Twitter?
"That's terrible. It was a bad snap."
What did you think of the game?
"We had stretches where we played good. Obviously these games are so tight, coming down to specialty teams. The power-play goal there, that second one, that kind of broke our back a little bit there. We had good momentum on our last power play before there, we just couldn't put it in there. They executed and after that we were on our heels a bit. They're a good team. Obviously they're undefeated for a reason. They skate real well. Carey Price is a good goalie, made some good saves on us. We're going to have to regroup and get ready for this west coast trip. I think it'll be good for us to get on the road and get back to playing the way we're capable of."
What happened on the Gallagher goal?
Defense - DET
Goals: 1 | Assists: 2 | Pts: 3
Shots: 7 | +/-: 4
"I just went to clear it in the corner away from harm's way and I was just surprised it ended up in the net. I was confused until I saw the replay."
What did they tell you about the ruling?
"I think they said that the puck went in the net before contact, which I didn't see the replay or anything so it's hard for me to say yes or no."
What are your thoughts on allowing two power-play goals?
Left Wing - DET
Goals: 2 | Assists: 7 | Pts: 9
Shots: 4 | +/-: 3
"Obviously PK has been really good for us. The first three games they basically kept us in the game. Today, obviously eventually some pucks would go in. Our power play gotta be better than it is right now."
What did you think on Mrazek tonight?
"He was good. It's the second back to back coming in for him playing in those kind of games. He's really handling the puck well. It makes it easier for our D."
Did the three guys (Helm, DeKeyser, Andersson) who made their season debuts tonight look like they didn’t have energy?
"No, I think all three had a good game, were skating well. Obviously it's going to be even better next one."
What did you think of the reviewed goal?
"Obviously contact was made. And obviously that's a tough goal. They reviewed it so it must have been right but I thought the coach's challenge was for that kind of thing. They kind of saved the review for Montreal there. When stuff like that happens, when they kind of slam into the goalie, there's not often there is a goal. I thought that should have been no goal.
"That's a dangerous play and that's not the first time No. 11 on their team has been running into the goalie either. It was pretty heavy contact so I'm surprised actually that it counted as a goal. We didn't lose the game there. Obviously the power play's got to be better. PK is doing a good job. Eventually pucks will go in. But the power play unit's got to produce more."
How about the offense in the last couple of games?
"Today I think we did it. Today I think was better than it was yesterday. Coming into a back to back, I think we played a good game today. The 4-1, I don't think that reflected the game. It was a one-goal game. But if we want to win these games, we have to take advantage when we have those special teams. Power play hasn't been good the last couple games here and we'd better fix that when we go to the west coast."
