DETROIT -- Michigan State -- the newly crowned NCAA hockey champions -- will visit Joe Louis Arena to support the Red Wings in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Spartans will be honored during the first intermission of Sunday's game.
The Spartans defeated Boston College, 3-1, in the title game last Saturday (April 7) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Wings draft pick Justin Abdelkader
scored the game-winning goal with 18.9 seconds remaining in regulation, leading the Spartans to their third national championship -- their first since 1986. MSU also claimed the national title in 1966.
Abdelkader was selected by the Wings in the second round (No. 42 overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
MSU will return to Detroit for next season's line-up of 'College Hockey at the Joe'. Events include the 43rd Annual Great Lakes Invitational, December 28-29, 2007; the much-anticipated Michigan-MSU match-up on February 23, 2008; and the CCHA Championship, March 21-22, 2008.
