DETROIT – Top-seeded Minnesota claimed the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament Championship with a win over third-seeded Michigan, 4-2, in Saturday’s tournament final at Joe Louis Arena. Minnesota, which also won the regular season Big Ten Championship, receives the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championship.
Minnesota’s Travis Boyd opened scoring early in the second period, but power-play goals by Zach Hyman and Alex Kile (Troy, Mich.) minutes later gave Michigan the 2-1 lead. Minnesota’s Kyle Rau evened the score midway through the middle frame for a 2-2 tie heading into the third period. Justin Kloos netted the game-winning goal with a wrist shot from the slot at 9:29, and Boyd sealed the game with an empty-netter in the final minute.
The 2015 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship 16-team bracket will be announced Sunday, March 22, with regionals taking place March 27-29.
