DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Dylan McIlrath to a two-year contract extension.

McIlrath, 27, served as an alternate captain for the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins this season and appeared in 52 games with the team, posting 10 points (1-9-10) and ranking among team leaders with a plus-13 rating (3rd) and 98 penalty minutes (1st). He also appeared in four postseason games with the team and was a plus-one with 10 penalty minutes during the team's first-round series loss. McIlrath, who was originally acquired by Detroit on March 1, 2017 in a trade from Florida, made his Red Wings debut in 2018-19 on March 25 at San Jose and went on to appear in seven games with the team, totaling a plus-two rating and four penalty minutes. He has skated in 149 AHL games with Grand Rapids over the past three seasons, posting 31 points (8-23-31), a plus-18 rating and 259 penalty minutes, in addition to five points (0-5-5) and 39 penalty minutes in 28 playoff games. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was a member of the Griffins' 2017 Calder Cup championship team.
Originally a first-round pick (10th overall) of the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, McIlrath has totaled 353 AHL games with the Connecticut Whale, Hartford Wolf Pack, Springfield Thunderbirds and Griffins since 2010-11, recording 74 points (21-53-74), a plus-28 rating and 760 penalty minutes. He has also played in 50 NHL games for New York, Florida and Detroit, notching five points (3-2-5), a plus-six rating and 98 penalty minutes. Prior to turning professional, McIlrath skated in 232 Western Hockey League games for the Moose Jaw Warriors, posting 74 points (16-58-74) and 551 penalty minutes from 2008-12, adding seven assists and 48 penalty minutes in 27 postseason contests.
