Marchenko and Ouellet swap places

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Alexey Marchenko from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and assigned defenseman Xavier Ouellet to the Griffins.

Marchenko, 23, has skated in 41 games with the Griffins this season and is tied for second among the team’s defensemen with 17 points (2-15-17). He also has a plus-15 rating, which leads Grand Rapids and ties for 12th-best in the AHL. The Moscow, Russia, native is in his second season in North America, tallying 18 points (3-15-18) and a plus-11 rating in 49 games with the Griffins in 2013-14. He also made his NHL debut with the Red Wings on Jan. 4, 2014 at Dallas, logging a plus-two rating and two penalty minutes in 13:21 of ice time. A seventh-round pick (205th overall) of Detroit in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Marchenko also played 82 games in the KHL from 2009-13, registering 11 points (4-7-11) with CSKA Moscow.

Ouellet, 21, has split his second professional season between Detroit and Grand Rapids, logging nine points (2-7-9) and a plus-five rating in 21 games with the Griffins and three points (2-1-3) and a plus-four rating in 21 games with the Red Wings. In 91 career AHL games, the Bayonne, France, native has recorded 26 points (6-20-26) and 38 penalty minutes. Originally drafted by Detroit in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Ouellet skated in 223 games with the QMJHL’s Montreal Juniors and Blainville-Boisbriand Armada from 2009-13, recording 160 points (41-119-160) and capturing a spot on the QMJHL First All-Star Team in back-to-back seasons (2012 and 2013).
