Little Wings youth program launched

DETROIT – The Red Wings today announced that registration is now open for ‘Little Wings,’ the team’s new youth hockey initiative designed to create an affordable way for children between the ages of five and eight to learn how to play hockey and develop a life-long passion for the game. Every participant will receive four, one-hour sessions of introductory practices at one of four rinks across the Metro Detroit area in January and a full set of ‘Little Wings’ branded hockey equipment, courtesy of the Red Wings, CCM and Perani’s Hockey World.

For the low registration cost of $100, participants will receive ice skates, a helmet, shoulder pads, gloves, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin guards, hockey socks, a hockey stick, an equipment bag and a ‘Little Wings’ jersey. Four hours of ice time is also included in the registration cost.

“We’re very excited for the launch of ‘Little Wings’ to further our commitment to youth hockey in the Metro Detroit area,” said Tom Wilson, CEO and president of Olympia Entertainment. “By providing affordable equipment and ice time we’re hoping to introduce a new generation to our great sport and instill in them a love for the game of hockey and the Detroit Red Wings.”

“Hockey is an amazing sport, but there are hurdles to getting new kids and families involved,” said Robert Perani, co-owner of Perani’s Hockey World. “The ‘Little Wings’ program eliminates several of those hurdles by establishing a low-cost, zero-risk opportunity for any family to try the game of hockey.”

Michigan rinks in Farmington Hills, Plymouth, St. Clair Shores and Trenton will host the ‘Little Wings’ program. Each session holds up to 60 children, for a total of 240 participants introduced to hockey through the program.

‘Little Wings’ is intended for children who have not participated in an organized hockey program. While skating experience is encouraged, it is not required. To participate, children must be between five and eight years old on Feb. 1, 2015.

The Perani’s Hockey World in Livonia, Mich. (19330 Middle Belt Rd.) will host a fitting event on Sunday, Nov. 23. All participants will be properly fitted for equipment prior to the on-ice sessions during the fitting event. The equipment will be ready for pick-up at the Perani’s location before the first practice.
