NEW YORK (November 1, 2005) -- Detroit Red Wings goaltender Manny Legace, who established a League record for most victories by a goaltender in October (10-1-0) and posted a 1.81 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and two shutouts, has been named the NHL Defensive Player of the Month for October.

Legace edged Nashville Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun (7-1-0, 2.51 goals-against average), Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe (3 goals, 12 assists in 12 games) and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky (3-12--15 in 12 games) for the award.

Legace allowed two goals or fewer in eight of 11 appearances, including his last seven consecutive starts, to help the Red Wings (11-1-0, 22 points) finish the month first in the NHL overall standings. He recorded his seventh career shutout, a 2-0 victory in Phoenix Oct. 15, and posted his eighth with a 6-0 victory in Columbus on Oct 22.

Legace eclipsed the previous mark for October victories (nine), set by Vancouver's Kirk McLean in 1991-92 (9-2-1) and matched by Toronto's Felix Potvin and Philadelphia's Dominic Roussel in 1993-94 (both 9-1-0).

Playing in his seventh NHL season, the 32-year-old Toronto native started each of Detroit's first 11 games this season, the longest such streak by a Red Wings goaltender in 40 years. In 1965-66, Roger Crozier started the first 13 games for the Red Wings.
