Olympia Entertainment today unveiled the newly-constructed “Iron D” Trophy set to be awarded to the winner of the “Duel in the D” between Michigan and Michigan State on Friday, Feb. 5 at Joe Louis Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m., and the game will air live on FOX Sports Detroit.
Constructed by Erik and Israel Nordin at the Detroit Design Center, the “Iron D” Trophy has several symbolic elements representing the city of Detroit, the Red Wings and the annual game between the Wolverines and Spartans held at The Joe.
A forged iron “D” sits at the center of the trophy to symbolize the city of Detroit, and the skyline of Hockeytown wraps around the base, including an image of the new Detroit Events Center sitting at the center. A large cup rests atop the trophy, while hockey sticks, a red glass puck and the logos of Michigan and Michigan State are featured along the sides of the trophy. Sitting at 25 inches tall and weighing nearly 50 pounds, the “Iron D” Trophy will continue to be awarded to the winner of the “Duel in the D” as the annual game moves from Joe Louis Arena to the Detroit Events Center.
“We wanted the design of the trophy to be strong, prideful and to signify the city of Detroit which has hosted the annual game between Michigan and Michigan State for the last 24 years,” said Tom Wilson, President and CEO of Olympia Entertainment. “The trophy will move with us into the new arena and we look forward to many more exciting games between Michigan and Michigan State in the future.”
“There’s such a proud tradition of hockey in Detroit and it’s a huge honor for us to be able to create a trophy that’s unique and emblematic of college hockey, Olympia Entertainment and the Red Wings,” said Erik Nordin. “We pulled details from the architecture throughout the city that will make the trophy look as powerful 20 years from now as it does when it is presented this year for the first time.”
Michigan head coach Red Berenson and Michigan State head coach Tom Anastos took part in the forging of the “D” at the Detroit Design Center in early January. Red Wings players Justin Abdelkader (Michigan State), Luke Glendening (Michigan) and Dylan Larkin (Michigan) also left their mark on the trophy by participating in the forging of the trophy following a Red Wings practice at Joe Louis Arena last month.
The “Duel in the D” features the most-played rivalry in college hockey, as the annual clash at The Joe will mark the 308th meeting between Michigan and Michigan State. The Wolverines hold a slight edge in the all-time series, 158-130-19. The rivals have met at least once per season at Joe Louis Arena since 1990 and Michigan holds the series advantage at The Joe with a 14-10-4 record.
