How can I sing the National Anthem?

Karen Newman is best known as the Voice of the Detroit Red Wings, having performed the National Anthem at Joe Louis Arena for almost 20 years. She has also gained considerable recognition as a backup singer for Detroit superstars Bob Seger and Kid Rock. In addition, Newman has released four of her own albums, including the classic rock-oriented pop album, Moment in the Wind, and the holiday album, What Christmas Means To Me. For more information on Newman or to contact her, visit KarenNewmanMusic.com.

On the occasion that Newman is unavailable, we consider other performers. To be considered as a potential National Anthem singer, you may submit your headshot, resume of performance history, including the largest crowd you have performed in front of, and a CD with both the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems. The U.S. Anthem should not exceed 90 seconds and should not be overly stylized. The Canadian Anthem should be no longer than 75 seconds and should not be overly stylized. Qualified applicants will be invited to a live audition at Joe Louis Arena.

All materials submitted for consideration become property of the Detroit Red Wings and will not be returned. No email submissions will be accepted. For consideration you may mail your packet to:

How can I propose at Joe Louis Arena?
There are two types of proposals during Red Wings games: A live proposal and a videoboard message.

The videoboard message consists of your proposal on the scoreboard at intermission – there is no live shot of the event as it happens. Proposals must be submitted at least 72 hours in advance of the game you are attending.

The live proposal takes place during a TV timeout as one of our promotional activities, and is shown on the videoboard. The Red Wings only allow up to 7 live proposals per season and require a $750 donation to the Red Wings Wish Club at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. Live proposals must be coordinated at least a week in advance of the game you are attending. To schedule a message, please fill out the online form by clicking here. You can also contact the Red Wings Wish Club at 313.745.5024 with questions.
