Howard becomes a new dad

DETROIT -- Jimmy Howard entered the world of parenthood over the weekend, when his wife, Rachel, delivered the couple's first child.

James Howard IV was born Sunday, weighing in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces.

Both mother and child are doing excellent, and dad has been given a few days off to spend with his family. In Howard's absense, the Red Wings have recalled goalie Joey MacDonald, who will be with the team when they face the Blue Jackets in Columbus Tuesday night.

In five appearances with Grand Rapids this season, MacDonald has a 3-2-0 record with a 1.98 goals-against average, a .935 save percentage and one shutout.

MacDonald will serve as backup to goalie Ty Conklin for the game in Columbus.

MacDonald, 31, was quite successful against the Blue Jackets last season, compiling a 2-0-1 mark with a 1.72 GAA, a .943 save percentage and a shutout.

Detroit re-signed MacDonald to a two-year contact extension this past summer.
