DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today agreed to terms with center Darren Helm on a five-year contract and defenseman Alexey Marchenko on a two-year contract.
Helm, 29, has skated in 443 games with the Red Wings since 2007-08, recording 162 points (72-90-162) and 112 penalty minutes. In 2015-16, the 6-foot, 196-lb., forward appeared in 77 games and ranked among team leaders with 13 goals (T7th), 13 assists (T10th), 26 points (T9th), three game-winning goals (T3rd) and 165 shots on goal (T4th). He set career highs in goals (15) and points (33) in 2014-15. Helm was a member of the Red Wings’ 2008 Stanley Cup championship team as a first-year pro, skating in seven regular-season games and contributing four points (2-2-4) in 18 postseason contests. He has totaled 82 career playoff games for Detroit, collecting 21 points (11-10-21) and 28 penalty minutes.
The St. Andrews, Manitoba, native was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the fifth round (132nd overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Helm played in 124 games with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins from 2007-09 and during a conditioning stint in 2013-14, registering 68 points (29-39-68) and 54 penalty minutes. He spent his major junior career with the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers, tallying 167 points (76-91-167) and 117 penalty minutes and winning the WHL championship in 2007. Helm was named a 2007 WHL East Second-Team All-Star and also earned a spot on the Canadian Hockey League Memorial Cup All-Star Team. He won gold with Canada at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship, picking up two goals in six games.
Marchenko, 24, enters his fourth season of professional hockey in North America and eighth professional season overall having logged 80 games and 13 points (3-10-13) at the NHL level. The Moscow, Russia, native started last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins before being recalled to the Red Wings and becoming a mainstay in the lineup, logging 66 games and 11 points (2-9-11). Marchenko has also skated in six postseason games with the Red Wings. The blueliner has logged 104 AHL games with Grand Rapids since 2013-14, registering 38 points (6-32-38), 42 penalty minutes and a plus-31 rating.
Originally a seventh-round draft pick (205th overall) of the Red Wings in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Marchenko spent four seasons with CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League prior to arriving in North America. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman registered 11 points (4-7-11) in 82 KHL games. He also tallied 78 points (18-60-78) in 84 games for the team at the junior level, winning a league championship in 2011 and leading all defensemen in scoring. Internationally, Marchenko represented Russia at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, tallying one goal and two assists in ten games en route to helping Russia claim the bronze medal. Marchenko also represented Russia at the 2008 and 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and was recently named to Team Russia for the upcoming 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
