DETROIT – Olympia Entertainment’s 2012-13 ‘College Hockey in the D’ schedule is set to begin four weeks from tomorrow as the 2012 Great Lakes Invitational gets underway on Saturday, December 29 at Joe Louis Arena. For the 48th year in a row, four high-profile NCAA hockey teams will descend upon the Motor City for a two-day, single-elimination-style tournament that has become a holiday tradition for sports fans in southeastern Michigan. Event mainstays Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan Tech will once again be competing for the MacInnes Cup this year, with special invitee Western Michigan set to participate for the first time since they claimed the tournament title in 1986 and the third time overall.
"It's always a good experience for our players to skate at Joe Louis Arena and this tournament is something that they look forward to every year,” says Wolverines coach and former Red Wings forward Red Berenson.
Western Michigan (currently the No. 10-ranked team in the country) will kick off the 48th annual GLI on Dec. 29 when they battle the Spartans at 3:30 p.m. Host school Michigan Tech will then take on Michigan at 7 p.m. in the second semifinal showdown of the day. On Dec. 30, Saturday’s losing squads will square off in the consolation game (puck drop is 3:30 p.m.) with the championship match set for Sunday evening at 7 p.m.
GLI tickets are available for purchase at the Joe Louis Arena box office (313-396-7575), all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000) and online at OlympiaEntertainment.com.
