Game 3 Quotes

by Bill Roose / Detroit Red Wings
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Here is what players and coaches had to say following the Red Wings' 4-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals Monday night at Arena.

On his team’s quick start
“Obviously we got off to a real good start. Helmer’s (Darren Helm) and Fil’s (Valtteri Filppula) lines were a real dominant force. They skated real well, were on the puck and in the end, that allowed us to get off a good start and take a little wind out of their sails. I thought they had a real good push for the last part of the first period and then in the second.”

On the play of goalie Jimmy Howard
“He made two exceptional saves in the first period. The previous game he didn’t have much work, tonight he had way more work and tonight was a tougher game for him. They had better traffic at the net and they played in our zone for longer periods of time.”

On scoring early in the first and third periods
“Even in the third period we got one on the first shift and that kind of killed momentum right away. That was a key goal for us to get that fourth one early in the third period.”

On the aggressive play of Phoenix
“I thought we responded well as a team. We knew we were going to face that type of team; they were going to put in a good forecheck on us and be aggressive at times and we were just trying to respond to it and wait for chances.”

On scoring early in the first and third periods
“They were coming pretty hard at us and we got goals on our first chances and that’s always hard to come back from.”

On the mindset needed for Game 4
“You’ve got to come out with that same desperation. It was very disappointing what happened at the start of tonight, it wasn’t disappointing from an effort point of view. We gave up those two quick goals; one goes off one of our guys pants and redirects, and the other one goes wide and finds a way in the net. You probably couldn’t ask for any worse start because we had good energy. We were excited to play tonight and you get kicked right in the teeth like that early. We’ve got lots of try, lots of will in that room; we’ve just got to turn that will into having some success on the scoreboard.”

On early goals deflating momentum

“You’re out there; you’re excited about playing the game and two really nothing shots go in. That’s stuff you don’t play for right there. We don’t have a guy in there that’s not competing their heart out, trying to find a way to get this done. That’s the way we have to come into Wednesday night, just come out and give everything you’ve got. Take it one game at a time and see what happens.”

On Detroit’s fast start
“Well tonight, obviously, the first two goals were pretty good bounces by them and they took advantage of it. We never got enough sustained forecheck, or anything really going five-on-five. That’s obviously been the problem the last couple of games.”

On looking ahead to Game 4
“No, we have to win the next one. You win the next one and then you get ready for the one after that.”

On the team’s effort and execution
“No, I mean, again, the first two goals, one goes off a skate and then one goes off a shin pad, off of our guy; obviously they play the game hard and they get the right bounces, and they get their bounces and they took advantage of it. But, I think they were up four or five shots on us right away. It’s hard to…you have to respond to that a little bit better. We tried and we just weren’t good enough five-on-five.”

On Detroit scoring early in each period
“I don’t know. Just it seemed like right from the first minute or two in the first period they got a couple of breaks and scored a couple of goals to take the crowd out of it early. We got our chances after that; we just didn’t capitalize on them. I mean, we had lots of momentum at times and we were buzzing in their end and had lots of chances but just couldn’t put it in. They found a way to do it early in every period.”
