DETROIT -- March was a very good month for Red Wings center Johan Franzen.

And on Tuesday, the NHL recognized the Red Wings' Swede for his accomplishments, naming him the Third Star for the month.

Franzen is the third Red Wings' player so honored this season with the league's monthly recognition, joining Henrik Zetterberg, October's  First Star, and Pavel Datsyuk, who was named the Second Star for January.

Franzen tied for eighth among NHL scorers for the month with 18 points and registered a franchise record six game-winning goals in 13 games. He recorded goals in 11 of 13 games and points in 12 of 13 games. He recorded the game-winning goals against Buffalo (March 2), St. Louis (March 5 and 25) and Nashville (March 9, 20 and 30)

Franzen’s record setting game-winning goal came on the last day of the month when the team honored Wings' legend Gordie Howe a day before his 80th birthday during a special pre-game ceremony prior to the start of Sunday’s 1-0 overtime win over Nashville.

Franzen has appeared in 69 games this season, collecting 36 points (26 goals, 10 assists) with a team-leading eight game-winning goals.

The Red Wings went 10-2-1 in March, improving their NHL-best record to 52-20-7 for 111 points as they look to win an unprecidented sixth Presidents’ Trophy.

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury were named First Star and Second Star, respectively, by the NHL on Tuesday.
