Detroit signs 2002 draft pick

DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced the signing of forward Valtteri Filppula to a three-year entry-level contract. In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the contract are not available.

Filppula (21, 5-11, 180, C) was Detroit's third-round pick (95th overall) in the 2002 National Hockey League Entry Draft. In 2004-05, Filppula tied for fourth in scoring for Jokerit Helsinki in the Finnish Elite League with 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 55 games.

He helped lead Jokerit to the league finals scoring 11 points in 12 contests (5-6--11). In 2003-04, Filppula won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships, finishing fourth in tournament scoring with nine points in seven games (4-5--9).
