Detroit recalls Samuelsson

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings on Sunday recalled right wing Mikael Samuelsson from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and assigned right wing Tomas Jurco and center Riley Sheahan to the Griffins.

Samuelsson, 37, has appeared in 26 games with the Red Wings this season, recording three points (1-2-3) and six penalty minutes. He has skated in 699 career NHL games with San Jose, the NY Rangers, Pittsburgh, Vancouver, Florida and Detroit, totaling 346 points (149-197-346) and 370 penalty minutes. The Mariefred, Sweden, native has also skated in two games with Grand Rapids since joining the team on Jan. 26, registering no points and eight shots on goal. Samuelsson has tallied 87 points (35-52-87) in 76 career AHL games.

Jurco, 21, has suited up in 19 games for Detroit as a first-year pro, notching seven points (3-4-7) and 10 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 193-pound forward made his NHL debut on Dec. 15 and scored his first NHL goal two days later against Anaheim. He also led the Griffins at the time of his call-up with 32 points (13-19-32) in 32 games. A native of Kosice, Slovakia, Jurco will represent his country at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Sheahan, 22, has picked up 11 points (3-8-11) in 18 games with Detroit and 18 points (8-10-18) in 28 games with the Griffins in his second professional season. The St. Catharines, Ontario, native helped the Griffins to a Calder Cup in 2012-13, recording 36 points (16-20-36) in 72 regular-season games and 16 points (3-13-16) in 24 postseason contests. He also recorded 64 points (20-44-64) in 114 collegiate games with the University of Notre Dame from 2009-12.
