By The Numbers: Gustav Nyquist

by Bill Roose / Detroit Red Wings

By The Numbers will highlight the Red Wings on-ice accomplishments in the 2013-14 season. Each week during the off-season, By The Numbers will profile a different player on the team, focusing on their statistical highs. This week we focus on forward Gustav Nyquist.

Led the team in goals, despite making his season debut on Nov. 21. His nine-goal lead over Tomas Tatar (19 goals) was the largest margin for a Red Wings’ goal leader in six seasons. He also led all NHL skaters with 23 goals from Jan. 20 until the end of the regular season.

The youngest player to lead the Red Wings in game-winning goals since a 24-year-old Sergei Fedorov paced Detroit with 10 GWG in 1993-94. Four of Nyquist’s GWG came on the road, including two at Florida (Dec. 28 and Feb. 6).

Led the Red Wings and finished in the top 10 among league skaters in shot percentage, scoring 28 goals on 153 shots on goal in 2013-14. He was perfect in his season debut, scoring twice on two SOG in the Red Wings 4-3 win over Carolina (Nov. 21).

Produced 14 points, including 12 goals, during the Red Wings best point streak of the 2013-14 season. The streak earned him recognition as First Star of the Week (Mar. 24) and Second Star of the Month (March).

Became just the 10th player during Mike Babcock’s coaching tenure to register a hat trick for the Red Wings. He scored three times in Detroit’s 6-5 overtime loss at Washington on Feb. 2. Johan Franzen (Feb. 27) and Darren Helm (Mar. 29) also produced three-goal games later in the season.

Tied for team best plus/minus rating in a single game in the Red Wings’ 7-4 win over New Jersey at Joe Louis Arena. Franzen also posted a plus-4 rating in that game against the Devils. Helm was a plus-4 in Detroit’s 5-0 win at New York Islanders (Nov. 29).
