Rookie goalie Joey MacDonald, who spent all but a few January days up in Detroit this season, was claimed today off of waivers by the Boston Bruins. MacDonald, 27, was placed on waivers Friday by the Red Wings.

The Wings had hoped MacDonald would clear waivers by 12 p.m. (ET) today, and then send him to their American Hockey League affiliate in Grand Rapids.

He made his NHL debut this season on October 19, but did not figure in the decision after relieving Chris Osgood. Since then, MacDonald compiled a 1-5-1 record and a 3.46 goals-against average with the Wings. His last appearance in a Wings' uniform was in a 6-1 loss at Philadelphia on Feb. 12. He got his first NHL win one night earlier when the Wings defeated Calgary, 7-4, at Joe Louis Arena.

This season, MacDonald had been the Wings' No. 3 goalie, behind veteran netminders Dominik Hasek and Osgood.

To make room for MacDonald on Boston's roster, the Bruins placed right wing Glen Murray (groin) on injured reserve.
