But Athanasiou was shoved into Lack, who lay on the ice for a long time until emergency personnel took him off the ice on a stretcher.
As he left, Lack gave the crowd a thumbs-up.
The Hurricanes released a statement saying, "Eddie Lack is currently undergoing tests at UNC REX Hospital. He does have full feeling in his extremities. The Hurricanes will provide additional information about his condition when it is available."
Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg knows Lack from Swedish national teams and through friends back home.
"He's a great guy," Zetterberg said. "You don't want to see anyone in that situation and obviously when you know him too it's a little tougher.
"You don't want to see a guy go down like that. Hopefully he's OK. Looked like all the doctors were there quick and got a handle on the situation so hopefully he's going to be fine."
1. Anthony Mantha: In a span of 1:10 midway through the second period, Mantha scored twice on the breakaway. The first one was unassisted at 9:04. Andreas Athanasiou sprung Mantha for the second goal with Danny DeKeyser getting the second assist. Mantha now is second on the team with 17 goals. Tomas Tatar leads with 23 and Athanasiou is second with 18. Mantha also had two goals on New Year's Day in the Centennial Classic at BMO Field in Toronto.

Andreas Athanasiou: According to Elias Sports, Athanasiou joins Anaheim's Corey Perry as the only players in NHL history to score their first and second career overtime goals on consecutive days. the 18 goals are the most Athanasiou has scored since his junior hockey days when he had 49 in 2013-14 with the OHL's Barrie Colts. Gustav Nyquist had the only assist on both of Athanasiou's overtime goals.
Quotable: "Gus kind of cleared the puck out. I had a tight angle there so I just tried to drive the net and fortunate enough, it worked out. I had no idea I hit him. The D cross-checked me pretty hard so I must have ran into him there a little bit. I haven't seen the play yet so I don't know what part of me hit him. 3. Tomas Tatar: No Wing has been hotter than Tatar of late. At 8:30 of the third period while on the power play, Nyquist found Tatar in the right circle and Tatar found the top left corner of the net for his 23rd goal of the season. That gives Tatar 11 goals and four assists in his last 18 games. Henrik Zetterberg got the second assist, so he needs just one point to reach 900 for his career.
Quotable: "I think momentum certainly matters, and when you get two power plays it can affect momentum, and the other thing, we did a real good job of was controlling the puck in the O-zone. I thought we started doing that in the second actually, but we didn't get enough shots out of it, so it didn't show on the shots total, but I thought we really started to control the puck in the O-zone and then in the third I thought we did a good job of controlling the puck in the O-zone and being gapped up and basically forcing the puck out of their hands and making them change. I thought overall it was a good third period until the end, when they started to push real hard." - Blashill
