DETROIT -- The Red Wings have signed left wing Justin Abdelkader to an amateur tryout, and the former Michigan State standout will be available to play in tonight’s game against Columbus at Joe Louis Arena at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

A native of Muskegon, Mich., Abdelkader starred for the Spartans the past three seasons, helping them win the 2007 national championship.

With 18-seconds left in regulation, he scored the game-winning goal in the title win over Boston College, and was named the Frozen Four's MVP.

Abdelkader, 21, was Detroit’s second-round selection (42nd overall) in the 2005 draft.
