/ New York Rangers
The Hartford Wolf Pack captured the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy for the American Hockey League’s regular season points championship with a 1-0 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Hartford Civic Center on Wednesday night.
The Wolf Pack also clinched the F.G. (Teddy) Oke Trophy for their first New England Division championship. It is the first division crown by a Hartford hockey team since 1987. The Pack now have a league-best 106 points with three games remaining in the regular season.
Hartford will play either the Providence Bruins or the Springfield Falcons in the first round of the 2000 Calder Cup Playoffs, beginning next Thursday and Saturday at the Civic Center.
Milan Hnilicka made 20 saves for his fifth shutout of the season, and the Wolf Pack’s fifth in the last nine games. Derek Armstrong’s power-play tally with 7:40 remaining in the second period was the game’s only goal.
Hartford finishes out the 1999-2000 regular season with three games this weekend, beginning on Friday night when they visit the Western Conference-leading Rochester Americans at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Wolf Pack return to Hartford for Fan Appreciation Night on Saturday against the Springfield Falcons, and then complete their third regular season in Providence on Sunday afternoon.
