by Staff Writer / New York Rangers
Hartford Wolf Pack General Manager Al Coates announced today that the club has signed defenseman Ryan Bast and forward Tony Tuzzolino to 25-game professional try-out contracts, and that defensemen Mike Mottau and Dale Purinton have been assigned to Hartford by the parent New York Rangers.

The Wolf Pack now have 24 players on their roster, including two goaltenders, eight defensemen, and 14 forwards.

Tuzzolino, who turns 25 on Monday, was a member of the Wolf Pack’s 2000 Calder Cup championship squad. He was loaned to Hartford by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on January 25, and recorded 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 32 regular-season games. He added two goals and two assists in 19 playoff matches.

Bast, 25, joined the Wolf Pack on a training-camp try-out last month. The fifth-year pro from Regina, Saskatchewan, has played 231 career AHL games with Saint John and Philadelphia, reaching the 1998 Calder Cup Finals with the Flames. He had one goal, nine assists, and 198 penalty minutes in 71 games with the Phantoms last season.

Purinton, who turns 24 on Wednesday, has been a fan favorite in Hartford for three seasons, totaling five goals, seven assists, and 816 penalty minutes in 124 games. His plus-21 rating ranked sixth in the AHL last season.

Mottau, 22, won the 2000 Hobey Baker Award as the outstanding player in college hockey, finishing up a career at Boston College that saw him lead the Eagles to three Frozen Fours and two appearances in the NCAA title game. Mottau signed a professional contract with the Rangers on Wednesday.

All four players could be in the lineup as early as tomorrow night when the Wolf Pack open their fourth season with a visit to the Springfield Falcons at 7:35. Then, on Saturday, October 7, the Pack commemorate their Calder Cup championship with special ceremonies prior to their home opener against the Providence Bruins. Festivities at the Hartford Civic Center are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. with a Trumbull Street block party.
