The Rangers were active at the NHL trade deadline on Tuesday, adding four new players to the organization in two separate deals.
The first trade, made with St. Louis, brought Swedish defenseman Christian Backman to New York in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Backman will find at least one familiar face in the Rangers locker room, because he won Swedish Elite League and Olympic championships with Blueshirts goalie Henrik Lundqvist
over the past few years.
The second deal, made with Phoenix, brought forwards Fredrik Sjostrom and Josh Gratton and goaltender David LeNeveu to the Rangers in exchange for Marcel Hossa and goaltender Al Montoya, who was playing for the team's AHL affiliate in Hartford. In Sjostrom, the Rangers added another Swede with strong ties to Lundqvist, since the two were junior teammates seven years ago. In LeNeveu the Rangers reunited goaltending coach Benoit Allaire with one of his former pupils, since the two had worked together for several years in the Phoenix system before Allaire joined the Rangers. Gratton, meanwhile, gives the team added toughness up front.
