Welcome to the Ultimate New York Rangers History Lesson. Class is now in session and will continue in the weeks and months ahead, as newyorkrangers.com strives to bring Rangers fans an exclusive season-by-season almanac to complement the current Rangers All-Time Roster
|Lester Patrick built the Rangers tradition in taking a second-year NHL expansion team to the Stanley Cup, but he did it with a group of players assembled by another legendary Hockey Hall of Famer. |
The season-by-season almanac will become a fixture in our Rangers history section on this site -- providing quick-reference answers to many of the hardest trivia questions you might ever encounter as a Rangers fan.
Some historical information that has never been thoroughly documented on the Internet will appear for the first time in these year-by-year reviews, including all-time trades, all-time minor-league affiliations, all-time Rangers debuts, year-by-year average attendance figures and comprehensive listings of players who attended Rangers training camps but never made the NHL cut.
The goal of this project is not just to unearth long-lost facts or beef up statistical information on this site, but rather to help remind fans of the great New York Rangers tradition and why hockey at Madison Square Garden has been such a unique experience for more than 80 years. We will focus not only on the story of the franchise and its players, but also the story of Rangers fans, who have played a tremendous role in making the team such an important part of New York’s sports history.
There are nine major-league baseball, football, basketball and hockey teams in the New York area, but only two are older than the Blueshirts. The Yankees date back to 1903, and the Giants are just one year older than the Rangers, having begun play in 1925. In 1926, the Rangers arrived at Madison Square Garden, and the rest is history -- a rich, remarkable history filled with colorful characters, passionate fans and in-arena traditions that make this team unlike any other in professional sports.
Look for updated season listings throughout the remainder of the summer and sporadically during the 2009-10 season.
We begin the series where it all started for the Rangers … the 1926-27 season
