Rangers prospect Peter Smrek has been named to the Slovakian Olympic Team. The defenseman has appeared in 21 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) this season, collecting one goal and one assist, along with 18 penalty minutes. Smrek began the season with New York, where he collected one assist in eight games with the Rangers.

The 6-1, 215-pounder helped the Slovakian National Junior team capture a bronze medal at the 1999 World Junior Championship in Sweden.

The Martin, Slovakia native was St. Louis' third round draft choice (85th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Rangers on March 5, 2001 in exchange for Alexei Gusarov.

Smrek will join seven other Rangers at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in February: Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, Mike York (USA); Theoren Fleury, Eric Lindros (Canada); Radek Dvorak (Czech Republic); Vladimir Malakhov (Russia).
