Sandy McCarthy Captures Mitsubishi/Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award

Prior to Saturday,s game against the Detroit Red Wings at The Garden, Sandy McCarthy was honored with the 2000-2001 Mitsubishi/Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Fans voted the first-year Rangers right winger as the Blueshirt player "who goes above and beyond the call of duty."


McCarthy, 28, has tallied career-high in goals, assists and points and has missed just one match during the season. The rugged eight-year veteran joins an elite list of past winners:

Following the 1987-88 season, the Rangers established a new award dedicated to paralyzed New York City police officer Steve McDonald, who was shot in the line of duty. The award was named after Officer McDonald and is presented annually to the Rangers player "who goes above and beyond the call of duty." A $25,000 check was presented to the Steven McDonald Foundation from the Tri-State Mitsubishi dealers and Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc.
