Rangers Youth Hockey Camp: Week 3 Day 4

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

On Ice AM Sessions: Campers were in for a big surprise today, as current New York Ranger, Martin St. Louis stopped by to meet each of the kids. In today’s morning session, players got a chance to practice even strength, man-on-man and odd-man situations. Players participated in 2-on-1 and 1-on-1 flow drills to start, and then broke down into stations. The different stations included 1-on-1’s, 2-on-1’s, 3-on-2’s and 2-on-3’s in small areas.

On Ice PM Sessions: Today’s afternoon session concentrated on shooting. Players reviewed deflections, rebounds and tip ins to start, then added a couple of one pass and shot drills. One station was dedicated to curling back and finding the late man skating into the offensive zone, and another conditioned players to utilize the boards to activate their defensemen and quickly set up in front of the net for a deflection.

Dynamic Training: Led by Matt Radoslovich of Velocity Sports in Mahwah, New Jersey. Players participated in drills that emphasized quick starts. First players did lunges and then participated in a drill that had them move from a two point stance into a power stride. Players also got a chance to run sprints with a parachute on. The session ended with players playing different variations of freeze tag.

Classroom Presented by Kumon: Players were able to review all the things they learned throughout the week regarding nutrition by playing trivia. The topics that were discussed this week were health, wellness, diet, hydration, exercise and making healthy choices

Off Ice Training: Coaches showed players the proper techniques in shooting the puck. After they reviewed the process step by step, players had to aim for certain areas of the net. Players and coaches were both calling areas for the players to shoot at, including right, left, high and low.
