by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

On Ice AM Sessions: New York Ranger alumni Adam Graves joined players for the morning session and instructed the kids on fundamental skating. They practiced edge work, skating agility, transitional skating and pivoting skills. Goaltenders focused on fundamentals that included proper skating technique and butterfly movement.

On Ice PM Sessions: The afternoon session went over what was learned in the morning session, and then added a puck to the drills. The group participated in drills that emphasized edges, transitions and pivoting with a puck. The players then played 3-on-3 that helped them practice defensive zone man-on-man coverage.

Dynamic Training: Led by Matt Radoslovich of Velocity Sports in Mahwah, New Jersey. The session started off concentrating on stretching. Matt then ran shuffling drills that focused on lateral movements. Also, players worked on body weight squats, abs/core work and competed in team relay races.

Off Ice: Today’s’ off ice skills session focused on skills pertaining to puck control and stick handling. The players participated in drills that practiced stick handling close to and away from your body, with an emphasis on keeping your head up while stick handling. Players took part in the drills around the body, hand slide wide, figure 8 and hands-&-wide.

Classroom, Presented by Kumon: Today’s classroom session began with passing out nutritional logs (fitbooks) to the players. The players then proceeded to fill out the log with what they had eaten today. The topic for discussion in the classroom was the different food groups and the importance of eating a balanced diet. Then the players went over what they had entered in their nutritional logs and determined if what they ate was good for them.
