Rangers Youth Hockey Camp: Week 2 Day 1

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

On Ice AM Sessions: New York Ranger alumnus Kevin Weekes joined players for the morning session. Kevin, who is currently an analyst for the NHL Network, offered insight on visual attachment during the morning session. The players on the ice practiced skating fundamentals such as good positioning, pivoting, crossovers and explosiveness.

On Ice PM Sessions: Today’s afternoon session started off with power skating drills. The group practiced their tight turns, transitions and crossovers. After working on their skating, players were rewarded with small area games such as 3v3, 4v4 and soccer in confined spaces.

Dynamic Training: Led by Matt Radoslovich of Velocity Sports in Mahwah, New Jersey. Matt had the players practice their acceleration and deceleration while running, shuffling and transitioning. The players also worked on their balance at the end of the session.

Classroom, Presented by Kumon: Today’s classroom session began with passing out nutritional logs (fit books) to the players. The players then proceeded to fill out the log with what they have eaten today. The classroom session focused on tracking what you are eating on a daily basis and how to determine if you are eating properly for an athlete.

Off Ice: The off-ice session is time that is designated to practice the skills you need to play hockey but don’t want to waste valuable ice time using. Today’s focus was on stick-handling and controlling the puck. The players participated in the drills that honed in on stick handling close to and away from your body with an emphasis on keeping your head up.
