RANGERS WEEKLY PROSPECT UPDATE - January 26, 2005

HARTFORD WOLF PACK:
The Wolf Pack embark on a two week road stint starting Wednesday in Norfolk, with a record of 30-11-1-2 and 63 points, good for second place in the Atlantic Division, and overall. The club still holds the best home record in the league at 21-3-0-1, and will put their 9-8-1-1 road record to the test in six games on the road in 10 days. The team is still tops in penalty killing, with an 89.80% and rank fifth on the powerplay with a 19.5% success rate.

On the power of back-to-back shutouts, and more than a period of shutout hockey on Saturday, goaltender Steve Valiquette owns the best goals against average in the league at 1.57, with Jason LaBarbera number two at 1.90. Jeff Hamilton is riding a nine game point-scoring streak, dating back to December 27. He has 14 points. Layne Ulmer has notched at least one assist in his last four games (6 total). Lawence Nycholat is tied for fourth among AHL defensemen with 28 points (5-23).

The team was to begin their longest road stand of the year on Sunday, with game one of seven on the road. But with the Lowell game canceled on Sunday, the club will have six straight away matches starting with four against East Division teams. The Pack are 7-4-0-0 against East Division rivals this year.

CHARLOTTE CHECKERS:
The Checkers seven-game winning streak came to a screeching halt at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia Saturday night, as the Columbia Inferno scorched Charlotte 6-3. Former Checkers winger Walker McDonald had a pair of goals for Columbia and Matt Ulwelling had three assists for the Inferno. The Checkers got goals from Brian Escobedo, Dusty Jamieson and Eddie Pershin, while goalie Kelly Guard took the loss in net. Referee Dean Sanborn gave each team a whopping eight power-play chances.

The Checkers will have five days off for the ECHL All-Star break and return to action on Friday, January 28 when they'll open up a four-game homestand by hosting the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:00 p.m. at Cricket Arena.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:
Zdenek Bahensky (Saskatoon) - Registered 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points along with 60 penalty minutes in 44 games. Three of his goals are short-handed goals. The Blades are 13-4-0 when he registers a point. Eight in points scored by rookies in the WHL with 24 points (eleven goals, 13 assists). Ranks second on the team with three short-handed goals and tied for fifth on the team with eleven goals. Tied for second in the WHL with three short-handed goals.

Dane Byers (Prince Albert) - Scored his first goal of this season on October 3 against Red Deer...Skated in 44 contests so far this season, tallying twelve points (six goals, six assists) and has accumulated 123 penalty minutes. Named the first star of the game after the match against Moose Jaw on Dec. 5. (W 5-1). He ranks first on his team with 123 penalty minutes.

Roman Psurny (Medicine Hat) - Has skated in 46 games, notching 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists) and 49 penalty minutes. Among WHL rookies, ranks tied for third in scoring with 31 points, third with 15 goals and second with a +17 rating. Ranks' fifth in scoring on his team with 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists). Last 5 games he has posted (3-2-5) with a four game point streak from Jan. 9 ending on Jan. 24 in a 2-4 loss to Swift Current.

Marcus Jonasen (Tri-City) - Has registered 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points, along with 41penalty minutes in 43 games. The 20-year old forward serves as the team captain for the second straight year. Ranks tied for first on the team with 14 goals and is fifth on the club with 25 points.

Rick Kozak (Kamloops) - Has registered eleven goals and five assists for sixteen points, along with 88 penalty minutes in 31 games for Prince Albert. Named 2nd star of the game on Jan. 19 vs. Moose Jaw (3-1) 1-1-2. Named 3rd star of the game on Jan. 22. @ Moose Jaw (W 3-0) 0-2-2. Last 3 games (1-3-4) both vs. Moose Jaw.

Brandon Dubinsky (Portland) - Has registered 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points, along with 106 penalty minutes in 46 games. On Portland, he ranks fourth in goals (16), tied for third in assists (25), third in points (41) and third in penalty minutes (106). Posted an eight-game point-scoring streak dating back to Dec. 18, registering 14 points (five goals, nine assists) over the span ending on Jan 11. Last six games he has recorded (1-5-6).

Nigel Dawes (Kootenay) - Has registered 25 goals and fourteen assists for 39 points, along with 24 penalty minutes in 39 games...Has a +/- rating of +9...Played in his 200th career WHL game Oct. 29 against Saskatoon.s first place in all-time goals (134). 8th in the WHL with 25 goals and tied for first with nine game-winning goals. Ranks first on his team with team with 25 goals and eleven power play goals. Ranks first on his team with 39 points. Registered a seven game point streak from Jan. 7 to Jan. 22, registering 10 points (6 goals, 5 assists).

Jonathan Paiement (Lewiston) - Has registered 6 goals and 37 assists for 43 points, along with 126 penalty minutes in 45 games...Has posted 10 multi-point games...Has ten multi-assist games including four games with three assists... Ranks second among all QMJHL defensemen with 37 assists and fourth with 40 points... Ranks sixth in the QMJHL with 37 assists... Ranks second on his team with 37 assists and ranks third on his team with 43 points and 126 penalty minutes..Has recorded 3 points in his last two games...Lewiston is 7-1-0 in their last eight games.

NCAA:
Al Montoya (Michigan) - In 24 games has a record of 18-5-1, along with a goals against average of 2.75 and save percentage of .895...He ranks 9th in the CCHA with a 2.75 GAA, first with 18 wins, seventh with 504 saves. Montoya is 9-0-1 in his last 10 appearances. Michigan is ranked #4 in the country.

Chris Holt (Nebraska-Omaha) - Appeared in 23 games, posting a 12-9-2 record along with a 2.64 goals against average and a .911 save percentage ... He ranks third in the league with 612 saves and 6th in the league with a 2.64 GAA ... Stopped more than 30 shots in both games last weekend vs Ferris State....Was named 1st star in a 2-2 draw with Ferris State on 1/14 and was named 2nd star in a 4-1 win over Ferris State on 1/15...Split this weekend's series against Miami (Ohio) and stopped 35 shots in a 4-2 loss, his first loss in his last 6 appearances

Greg Moore (Maine) - Has registered eleven goals and five assists for 16 points, along with twelve penalty minutes in 26. Named 2nd star of the game vs. Massachusetts on Jan. 14 (T 2-2) and Jan. 15 (W 5-2). Tied for first on his team with eleven goals, ranks first with eight power-play goals, and tied for third with 16 points.
