The Rangers erased a two-goal deficit but surrendered a pair of late goals in a 4-2 loss to the Capitals in Washington.
After Jesper Fast tied the game, 2-2, midway through the third period, Washington scored two goals in 2 minutes beginning with Matt Niskanen with 3:32 left in regulation before Tom Wilson iced the contest with his fifth goal of the year.
The Rangers never led in the game, starting with Jay Beagle's goal just 14 seconds into the game. Washington controlled the first period and outshot the Rangers 17-9 after 20 minutes.

But New York responded in the second but could not solve goaltender Braden Holtby before Washington doubled its advantage to two when Nicklas Backstrom potted his fifth of the year at 11:42.

The Rangers got on the board in the final minute of the second when J.T. Miller fed Michael Grabner at the top of the faceoff circle. Grabner's low wrist-shot beat Holtby stick side for his team-leading 14th goal of the year.
Fast tied things at 9:37 of the third with his second goal in as many games, and fifth in his last seven contests.

Henrik Lundqvist, who missed Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh with the flu, made 36 saves in the loss.
New York heads home to face the Devils tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden.
